One sexton once decided to read an announcement so solemnly that even the flies would sit up straighter. He took his place by the church, unfolded the paper, drew in a breath. And at that very moment a rooster decided the village was short a second authority. The sexton reads: the community is hereby called to assemble. The rooster: cock-a-doodle-doo. The sexton, louder. The rooster, louder still.
The people listened to both and nodded, because each of them sounded confident. Afterwards an old woman said the rooster had explained it more briefly. The sexton took offence, but folded his paper more neatly. From that day on, whenever someone speaks too grandly, people ask: shall we call the rooster to translate?
